10 years ago, Bill Dollins published “Post GIS” (note the space) on his geoMusings blog. Now he’s revisited the topic, in a new article, “‘Post GIS’ revisited”.
In this update, Bill describes three waves of GIS dissolution – developments that, by his own account, went further than he could have imagined a decade ago:
- The opening of the walled garden: Moving from GIS monoliths to modular libraries and web standards
- The stack era: Building GIS infrastructures from commodity components using standard languages and containerization
- The dissolution of code: Enabling natural-language interaction and emphasis on articulation over implementation
There’s much more thoughtful insight in the article, and I highly recommend checking out both this piece and the original 2017 post.
